Feature Phones to Smart Devices

More than a month ago, Sony announced the end of feature phones (read: dumb phones) when it acquired Ericsson.

This signifies the end of an era of smarter-than-smartphones phones. No more Walkman phones. No more Cybershot phones. I will miss the ease of using the nifty little camera phones. I will miss the ease of making a call. I will miss the simple and time-effective interface. :`(

Speculation was rife about the next OS from the mobile phone giant. Digital Trends, among a few other tech sites, thinks:

It is doubtful that Sony will be making its own operating system, so that only leaves three options for Sony.
1.) It can stick solely on Android and hope for the best.
2.) It can branch out to make a Windows Phone 7 devices in addition to Android.
3.) It can blow everyone’s minds and buy webOS from HP.

But the rumours were already put to bed even before the announcement was released to the press. A month prior to the inevitable acquisition, Sony Ericsson promised to treat ALL its 2011 smartphones with the latest Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest and some say, the greatest Android OS ever.

Sony Ericsson (This may be the last time I put the two words together) and their love for Android desserts might not be an one-sided affair. According to the same article above, Sony's support for the Android community was reciprocated with a developer's promise to roll out custom interface for its 2011 devices.

OK... the crux of the matter is, I will have to move on from feature phones soon. I've been a staunch supporter of Sony Ericsson camera phones, but it's time to move on when my last Cybershot phone dies.

Other brands of feature phones just won't do. None of them can hold a candle to Sony Ericsson.

Besides a great camera, clear phone calls and simple SMS commands which my dear Sony Ericsson phones have provided, I will need a future device that serves my blogging or writing needs, and the occasional Facebook musings.

Smartphones, tablets, or a padfone? Food for thought.

  1. I don't think it will complete cease production of the feature phones. as I believe there are niche market for the phones. perhaps for those working in the defense industry who are not permitted to use smartphones?

  2. Yes, there will be feature phones.. just less good ones. =P Let's hope they release one that i will like. If there's no camera, at least make everything else good enough for me.

  3. Feature phones will continue to be made especially for emerging markets. They out sell smartphones by a factor of 10 in these markets. In India they are only 6% of the new handsets sold next year they are only expected to grow to 8%.
